Scribes and Readers for Assessments

Assessing and understanding your child

About
Scribes and Readers

At JA Therapy, we offer support for learners who require access arrangements during assessments, including the use of a scribe and/or a reader. These accommodations are designed to support learners in demonstrating their knowledge and understanding without being limited by specific learning barriers.

What is a Scribe?

A scribe is a trained adult who writes or types exactly what the learner dictates during an assessment. The scribe does not assist with content, structure, spelling, or grammar unless explicitly instructed by the learner.

This support is suitable for learners who experience:

  • Difficulties with writing or fine motor skills

  • Dysgraphia or severe spelling challenges

  • Processing speed difficulties that impact written output

The learner remains fully responsible for the content of their responses, including punctuation and paragraphing, unless otherwise specified in their accommodation plan.

What is a Reader?

A reader is a trained adult who reads assessment instructions and questions aloud to the learner. The reader may repeat or re-read content as needed but cannot explain, interpret, or simplify the meaning of the questions.

This support is suitable for learners who experience:

  • Reading difficulties (e.g. dyslexia)

  • Challenges with decoding or reading fluency

  • Visual processing or attention difficulties

The aim is to ensure the learner can access the assessment content independently, without being disadvantaged by reading barriers.
